The Great Impact of Sports
Sports are not only known to help make a city much livelier to live in, but they also help a city economically in more ways than people take into consideration. Having a sport within a city causes more jobs for people, more revenue for small and big businesses within the city, and overall, more revenue toward the improvement of the economical situation of a city.
Everyone knows that when a city has a winning sports team, no matter the type of sport, the entire attitude of a city changes for the better. People become much more happy and involved and, in essence, feel the need to spend more money on things to show their pride and support for the winning team; this helps to build added revenue for the city. On the other hand, if there was a city with no sports, there would be less revenue earned, fewer jobs and fewer purchases made.
A city with a winning sports team makes people feel more proud; it makes them want to buy things that represent their home team. Many people go out and buy hats, jerseys, flags, jewelry, posters and many other sports memorabilia. When people spend their money on a city’s team, all of that revenue cycles around and benefits everyone, especially from the city’s economical standpoint. A team must also purchase what they need to actually play the sport, usually making it beneficial for the city if their purchases were made there.
Taking into consideration that many people love to see their winning sports teams live and up close, we must include seasonal and regular ticket purchases to the added bonuses of helping the revenue of a city. To begin with, in order to arrive at most sports events, most people probably aren’t getting there by foot; most will use a different form of transportation, such as a car. A car needs to have gas in order to transport people from one place to another, causing a gas station and its employees to benefit from that outing. There are also many people who like to tailgate before a sporting event. When people tailgate, they usually purchase more food and drinks than they usually do for that event (not to mention the added disposable cups, plates and plastic ware needed). From a tailgating event, revenue for a city also increases, since people most likely purchased the items necessary from their local grocery store found within the city. In turn, the employees are also benefiting from this event considering a business needs to make money to pay its employees.
The next step and once inside the actual sporting event, there are usually plenty of food, drinks, appetizers and desserts available for purchase. Thanks to marketing techniques and basic wants, most people that were outside tailgating are very likely to get a whiff of what’s inside and purchase a few extra items from the stadium (or place sporting event is taking place). Those people that didn’t tailgate are bound to get hungry and purchase something, making all that revenue beneficial toward the city.
Aside from the food and drinks available for purchase inside the sporting event, there are also plenty of memorabilia available for sale to the adoring fans of the team. Not only are there different basic sports apparel available for purchase at many sporting events, but many of them offer personalized print. At many shops inside stadiums, someone can get their name written on shirts, hats or other items. There are also pictures, autographed pictures, flags, noisemakers, etc. available for purchase, all of which benefit a city’s economy.
Many of the little shops in stadiums are owned by separate businesses that, in turn, provide jobs for people that live in that city. Those businesses are also paying taxes on all the money that they are earning from the sports team. As the cycle continues, their employees are also earning their income based on a sports team; it is because of that sport that they have a job. Most likely, the employees will turn around and spend their hard earned money within the city, creating an overall positive outcome for the economy.
Considering that not everyone is able to afford season tickets, or one time usage tickets for that matter, many people are still interested in watching their favorite home sports team on television. Many sports games are only available through cable, causing a local cable provider to also benefit from sports. The same rules would then apply to the cable provider of making more revenue, providing more jobs and having to pay city taxes. The city benefits from sports as much as the dedicated, and even not so dedicated, fans who watch them.
All of the sporting expenditures mentioned are based on a regular sports team’s fans. If the team is doing really well, and they are becoming more popular outside the city, the revenue can possibly be more than doubled for a city. If a sports team becomes better known, people that don’t live in that city will come in as tourists to support the popular team. Hotels, car rentals, buses and more restaurants would have greater revenue from the profitable tourism that sports create.
Since sports are known to create a great amount of revenue for everyone, a city would benefit greatly from sports. A city with sports has proven to have positive effects on a city.
